Product Description

Bois de Boursan produces gorgeous, traditional-style Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate was founded in 1955 by Jean Versino who was Piedmontese by origin. It is run today by his son, the enthusiastic Jean-Paul Versino. The estate took the name of the lieu-dit where the family lives, Bois de Boursan, in the mid-1980s. It is now 16 hectares (59 acres), divided into 27 plots that are spread all over the Châteauneuf territory. Jean-Paul's wines have moved into top tier since the early 1990s, and are classic examples of deep, full, old-vine Châteauneufs (vine age range from 40 to 100 years-- with roughly 65% Grenache, 15% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, and the rest a field blend of various varietals that make up the Châteauneuf palette. Due to the age of the vines and careful work in the vineyards, the yields are kept very low, averaging only 28 h/h. The vineyards have been farmed organically for years, though without the official certification. The harvest is done by hand and two buckets are used for sorting the grapes: perfect grapes go into one, and less-than-perfect go into the other to make a vin de table. As with many of his traditional Rhône brethren, Versino believes that vinifying with the stems and aging the wine for extended periods in foudres gives Bois de Boursan's Châteauneuf its unique character. Bois de Boursan is textbook, old-school Châteauneuf with flavors and aromas of lavender and notes of kirsh liquor, garrigue and pepper spice. Nothing flashy or opulent, just purity and finesse. Jean-Paul Versino is doing stellar work in his vineyards and making superbly concentrated Châteauneufs. Versino has only old vines and some 40 parcels spread out all over the AOC. Only a portion of the crop is bottled, with a large amount still going to négociants. This allows Jean-Paul to keep only best of the domaine for their bottlings. Words to sell by: Classic vintage in CdP, multi-layered, traditional producer, great with lamb or any other game or red meat
